THE Cesarewitch is one of the biggest races of the season - in terms of betting activity and horse numbers.

Cesarewitch runners and riders

TASHKHAN

KHAN might. Proper stayer who loved the mud when winning at Chester last time. Placed in Grp1s so not ignored despite big weight.

WORDSWORTH

WORTH a go. Good form over shorter for Aidan O’Brien and has done well since going hurdling. Big weight and wide draw but has class.

JACKFINBAR

JACK it in. Willie Mullins respected but he’s been struggling off this mark and may not stay.

OCEAN WIND

WIND blows. Another high draw who won the trial for this in 2020 but has scored just once since.

NOT SO SLEEPY

SLEEPY awake. Placed in this three times and scored in the mud at Newbury latest. Usually best fresh but could hit the frame again.

TRITONIC

WORTH a Tri. Solid third in Ascot Stakes off this mark in June. Stays and likes a big field. Fair outsider.

THE VERY MAN

VERY modest. Won Shergar Cup stayers and second in big race over 2m at Galway this season. Has shot up weights and wide draw isn’t ideal.

PIED PIPER

PIPER in tune. Top hurdler who likes soft and Ryan Moore is a top booking. Will stay and handles a big field. Clear chance from a fair draw.

M C MULDOON

DOON doomed. Hasn’t won on Flat since debut in 2018 and struggled in Irish version of this. From Willie Mullins but hard to fancy.

JESSE EVANS

GOOD Evans. Solid fourth in Irish version and 1lb lower here. Stays, likes soft and enjoys a big field. One to consider.

LOT OF JOY

JOY less. Buick on board for Mullins but has a wide draw and recent Flat form has been modest.

THE SHUNTER

SHUNT can move. Now 18 months since last win but likes this test in a big field on soft. Decent draw and dangerous off this mark.

TYPEWRITER

TYPE cast. Two years since last win but best run for a while at Goodwood latest. Still has stamina to prove.

ZOFFEE

FEE may pay. Just pipped in the Chester Cup over this trip on soft from same mark. Modest since but these conditions could spark revival.

THE GRAND VISIR

NOT Grand. Last won in 2019 and recent form has been modest. Trainer respected but lots to find.

AZTEC EMPIRE

AZ to improve. Few miles on clock and decent over 2m. Bit to prove after running a shocker at Haydock latest.

EMIYN

IYN the pack. Best at Chester in the mud and ran well there last time. This is tougher.

LAW OF THE SEA

SEA sunk. Stays well but was poor here last time and hasn’t won for two years.

VINO VICTRIX

VIN the money. Cracking second in this last year and back from 2lb lower. Went close in warm-up at Goodwood last time and should be spot on for another big run.

TEMPORIZE

PAY Rize. Easy winner over 2m4f at Goodwood last time and best with some cut. Needs a bit more from 7lb higher but shortlisted.

GOSHEN

MUST Go. Last Flat win in 2019 and usually runs in small fields over hurdles with mixed results. Held twice off a similar mark at Goodwood last season.

GOLDEN SHOT

SHOT bolt. Solid form over 1m6f at lesser levels but 10lb above last win. Longer trip should suit but this is his toughest test.

BLAZEON FIVE

FIVE alive. Battler who does well over 2m. Trip too short at Goodwood last time and looks on a fair mark albeit from tough draw.

BASHFUL BOY

OH Boy. Well held in trial for this here last time and would like faster ground.

ZENON

ON shortlist. Rusty after three years off last time but was a decent stayer before that and looks on a fair weight. Soft suits and Mullins will have him ready.

LAND OF WINTER

COLD Winter. Beaten 40 lengths in trial for this last time which says it all.

GEREMIA

MAMMA Mia. Decent form at lower levels and stays but needs more in this company.

SHEISHYBRID

DON’T be Shy. Good second in trial for this last time and off same mark. Wide draw a worry but can go well.

YORKINDNESS

YOR move. Decent stayer at lower level but struggled in good grade at Chester last time. Needs more.

PONS AELIUS

PON gone. Fair over 2m but didn’t stay this far at Chester last time and must raise his game.

MOTAZZEN

ZEN master. Back to best when winning at Nottingham in the mud and stays. Yard in fine form.

MR ESCOBAR

BAR bill. Lightly raced, hasn’t shown much since joining Willie Mullins but longer trip may help. Bad draw.

WONDERWALL

BRICK Wall. Fair hurdler but modest on level including when held at Chester latest.

GRAND PROVIDENCE

GRAND chance. Sneaks in at bottom of weights after winning trial for this last time. Only three so scope for lots of improvement.

Templegate's tip

RAISE a glass to VINO VICTRIX in the Cesarewitch (2.40 Newmarket, nap).

He was a cracking second in this 12 months ago and is back from 2lb lower after a solid prep run at Goodwood.

I’m still wincing from Pied Piper getting chinned at the Cheltenham Festival but he’s fair on the level too and can go close under Ryan Moore.

Fellow jumper The Shunter should like this challenge, while Grand Providence won the trial and has place claims off her low weight.
