DEFENCE STARTS HERE

Man Utd vs Crystal Palace: Ten Hag’s side begin their Carabao Cup defence against Eagles – stream, TV, team news

MANCHESTER UNITED are hoping they can continue to re-track their off the rails start to the season as they host Crystal Palace in the the Carabao Cup third round tonight.

The troubled Red Devils finally got back to winning ways on the weekend after beating Burnley 1-0 at Turf Moor.

Bruno Fernandes' stunning first-half strike gave United all three points as Erik ten Hag's side claimed their third win of the season.

But it wasn’t as simple as the scoreline might suggest with the Clarets dominating the ball and feeling they should’ve come away with at least a point.

Ten Hag's troops won the Carabao Cup with a 2-0 win over Newcastle at Wembley last February and will be hoping to keep their hands on the trophy this year.

Roy Hodgson's Crystal Palace, meanwhile, go into the game on the back of a goalless draw with Fulham over the weekend.

Palace have made a steady start to the new season, winning two, drawing two and losing two of their first six league games.

They currently sit in tenth place in the Premier League.

And Eagles fans will be hoping for a good cup run if they can get past the hot-and-cold Red Devils.

Old Trafford has been a difficult hunting ground for the Eagles of late, with Hodgson's troops losing on their last two visits.

But prior to that, they registered 2-1 and 3-1 wins in their 2019 and 2020 trips to the Theatre of Dreams.

The cup always loves to throw up a surprise as well and Palace will be quietly confident of getting the better of a United side in disarray.

Both sides will also take tonight’s game as a pre-cursor to this Saturday when they repeat the exact same fixture in the Premier League.

Ten Hag is trying his best to steer the ship at Old Trafford and although they secured a victory at the weekend, avoiding an early cup exit is crucial if he doesn’t want to cause further unrest in the red side of Manchester.

What is their form like?

It’s been a tough start to the season on and off the pitch for Manchester United who have lost four of their last six games in all competitions.

A 1-0 win over Burnley at the weekend could be a sign of things healing themselves at the historic club, but it still feels like they are just one poor result away from another collapse.

Crystal Palace are just one point and one place behind Man Utd in the Premier League table this season.

Sitting in tenth position, the mixed start they’ve had to the campaign is welcome at Selhurst Park after a scare at the bottom end of the league last season.

It’s about a mid-table as it can get from the opening six league games for Palace who have won two, drawn two and lost two of their clashes so far.

What is the team news and any injuries to worry about?

Marcus Rashford is said to be fit and available despite the fact he was involved in a car crash following Man United's match with Burnley on Saturday night.

The England forward was left shaken-up, but thankfully, nobody was hurt.

Elsewhere, boss Ten Hag revealed Sergio Reguilon was substituted during Man United's win at Turf Moor due to illness.

Mason Mount could return after missing the last four games due to injury.

Hodgson will be missing a number of players, with Michael Olise, Matheus Franca, Jefferson Lerma, Naouirou Ahamada and James Tomkins all out.

And star striker Odsonne Edouard, who has five goals already this season, is expected to miss the clash with a hamstring problem he picked up against Fulham.

Who will be the star men?

Bruno Fernandes has had about as tough of a time as captain as you possibly can since taking the armband from Harry Maguire this summer.

But he’s stepped up when his team need him and if he starts will be a crucial player for United tonight.

In the absence of Edouard and Olise, Palace will look towards England’s Eberechi Eze for the spark they will need against the Red Devils.

What have the managers said?

Erik ten Hag has issued a rallying cry to players and fans alike at Old Trafford to motivate his team to keep hold of their trophy.

He said: “It [The Carabao Cup] was an important competition for us last season and that has not changed this year.

“We want to defend the trophy, so as we welcome Roy Hodgson and Crystal Palace tonight, this is an opportunity for us to keep moving in the right direction.”

Hodgson on the other hand has taken a calm approach to matters as usual and is aware that it’ll be a tough game for his side.

He said: “It will be a very difficult game, there’s no doubt about that. But it will be a good experience,

“And if those players who haven’t had a chance can get a chance it will be good for them to show what they can do at the very top level.”

SunSport Prediction

As much as their early season form would mean a Man United loss wouldn’t come as a surprise, they should wind up as winners here.

Roy Hodgson has hinted at rotating his squad ahead of Saturday’s Premier League game and is without his star striker Edouard.

Although United have injuries themselves, they should still have enough to see this game through.

Prediction: Manchester United 2-1 Crystal Palace
