Fans react after Ally McCoist slams Scotland supporters in God Save The King row as one says ‘he’s meant to be Scottish’

ALLY McCOIST'S comments on Scotland fans booing God Save the King have polarised football fans in the wake of the feisty clash against the Auld Enemy.

The Rangers legend took a dim view of the jeering from the Tartan Army ahead of the Hampden clash - as he revealed that he had been SINGING the anthem - as "he's British".

McCoist said on TalkSPORT: "I think another country's national anthem should be respected and I think it was absolutely out of order.

"I just think it is a distinct lack of respect. I genuinely dislike it intensely."

His fellow pundit Michael Stewart took a different tack, pointing out that the anthem is the BRITISH national anthem, and that it talks about crushing "rebellious Scots".

And the reaction to the row today seemed equally conflicted.

One fan wrote on X, formerly Twitter: "For someone who claims to have been present at so many Scotland games , why is he so shocked that it was booed last night. Hardly a unique occurrence."

Another was more forthright, saying: "He’s meant to be Scottish Get him off all future Scotland games."

A second said: "And tae think we thought at one point he was a good guy. This is just cringeworthy."

The pundit's social media followers pointed to the anti-Scottish lyrics of God Save the Queen - and said they felt the same level of outrage had been missing when England fans booed Flower of Scotland.

Another said: "McCoist's comment that 'he is British' is the crux of the issue. GSTK is either the English nat anthem or the British one. It can't and shouldn't be both."

One fan asked: "Did he slam the English for booing Flower of Scotland".

But there was plenty of support out there too for the Rangers hero.

One fan said simply: "Well said Super Ally."

Another wrote: "What a guy. Best commentator in football."

"If you were born in Scotland, brought up here and consider yourself scottish then you are British.
