SHE'S BACK

Forgotten superstar branded ‘clearly exceptional’ set to make comeback after missing months of season with illness

THE FORGOTTEN horse of the season, 1,000 Guineas winner Mawj, is set for an audacious autumn campaign.

Trainer Saeed Bin Suroor has been forced to sit on his hands since his star filly bravely won the first Classic of the season at Newmarket.

She downed subsequent Irish 1,000 Guineas and Royal Ascot winner Tahiyra in the process and racing fans have been itching to see her hit the track again.

She was branded "just exceptional"; by her jockey Oisin Murphy following the win

She was meant to rematch with Tahiyra at Royal Ascot in the Coronation Stakes but a chest infection prevented her from round two.

But Bin Suroor is hoping to give his filly the green light towards the Breeders' Cup Mile in November, via Newmarket a month before.

He told : “Mawj was supposed to go to Royal Ascot after the 1,000 Guineas but she was coughing and we found she had a chest infection which turned out to be a bad one.

“There are a few options for her. Firstly the Sun Chariot at Newmarket, or a week later there is the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland.

"Hopefully if she runs well in either of those, we then hope to go to the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita where she should be suited by the track.”

Godolphin have an excellent record in the Breeders' Cup Mile, winning the last two with Space Blues and Modern Games.

The two-day Breeders' Cup returns to Santa Anita this year and kicks off on November 3.

Both those winners have been retired, however, as Godolphin endures a nightmare season by their standards.

Derby winner Adayar and St Leger winner Hurricane Lane are both off to stand at stud, leaving Godolphin with a big hole to fill.
