But his appearance alongside Michael Chandler on the Ultimate Fighter series has paved the way for a comeback to the ring.

The series saw McGregor train a team of rookies looking for a chance to fight in the UFC while Chandler coached a team of veterans who had already fought in the organisation and were looking for a second chance.

The series saw the pair develop an increasingly bitter rivalry which will now culminate in a fight between the two.

McGregor posted a tweet announcing the event which will see the two fight on Saturday December 11.

He also included a countdown to the fight in the picture.

Speculation over when the fight will happen has been rife for months now, with the fight first being mooted all the way back in February.

It's understood that the delay in making the fight happen was due to McGregor's absence from the United States Anti-Doping Agency's testing pool.

UFC and USADA policy requires fighters re-entering the pool to be available for drug testing for a minimum of six months before they're eligible to compete.

MMA's top promotion can, however, issue an exemption to the six-month notice rule in "exceptional circumstances".

Assuming that the screenshot that McGregor posted is to be believed then the fight will now take place before the year is done in Las Vegas.

With the fight falling through so many times already, fans will not be getting their hopes up just yet.

Chandler is yet to announce the bout from his side and Dana White has so far remained silent on his side.

There has also been no official confirmation that the fight will go ahead from the UFC.
