Winger Harvey Barnes soon followed him through the door as he joined from Leicester City in a £38m deal.
Newcastle then completed the signing of Tino Livramento from Southampton.
The 20-year-old full-back cost £30m - with 18-year-old Gambian starlet Yankuba Minteh also joining from Danish club OB Odense for £6m only to be loaned straight to Feyenoord.

A deal has allegedly already been completed for Heffernan to join Newcastle after he shone in two pre-season friendlies for the Magpies.
It remains to be seen whether he links up with Howe’s first-team squad, although it is widely-expected that he will initially be part of the club’s U21 set-up.
And Tonali and Heffernan are not the only men to head to Newcastle from Milan.
