Who is Paralympian Jody Cundy?

Who is Jody Cundy?

Jody Alan Cundy, CBE, was born on October 14, 1978, and is an English cyclist and former swimmer.

He has found fame through his impressive sporting career, going on to win at multiple competitions over the years.

He has won 22 world titles - 19 in cycling and three in swimming.

In August 2023, he won gold in the C4 1km Time Trial in at the 2023 World Championships in Glasgow.

At the same event he set a new world record of 10.427 for the MC4 200m flying start.

When Jody was just 10 years old he started swimming but it was in 2006 that he made the switch to cycling, saying he was never a natural swimmer and he had to put a lot of work in to achieve what he did.

Jody was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2022 New Year Honours for services to cycling.

In 2023 he joined the lineup for Strictly Come Dancing.

What disability does Jody Cundy have?

Jody was born with a deformed foot which was then amputated when he was three-years-old.

When he was aged 10, his parents met a disabled girl's parents and they discussed disability swimming.

After looking into it, his parents decided to get him involved where he showed early potential, breaking swimming records for his age group.

He became a leading member of his local King's Lynn club's team and made his international debut at the swimming World Championships in Malta in 1994, where he won gold in S10 100m butterfly and bronze in the S10 100m backstroke.

Jody competed in the S10 Paralympic category.

The class is for swimmers - hence the S - with minimal weakness affecting their legs, missing feet or below the knee amputation, and issues with their hips.

In cycling, Jody competes in the C4 events, which includes people with lower limb impairments or issues with lower limb functionality.

When did Jody Cundy compete in the Paralympics?

Jody has represented Great Britain at an incredible seven Paralympics.

His first outing was in 1996 in Atlanta, US, when he won gold in the men's S10 100m butterfly.

At the Sydney Games in 2000, he bagged three more medals, successfully defending his 100m butterfly title, as well as winning gold the men's 4x100m freestyle relay 34 pts, and bronze in the S10 100m backstroke.

Four years later in Athens, Jody picked up bronze in the 100 m Butterfly S10.

Then at the 2008 summer Paralympics in Beijing, Cundy represented Great Britain in cycling.

He broke the world record on the way to winning the gold in the LC2 1km Time Trial which made him one of only a handful of athletes to have become Paralympic champion in two different sports.

He also bagged gold in the men's team sprint.

He then competed in the 2012, 2016, and 2020 Paralympic Games.

At London 2012, he won a bronze in the men's individual pursuit C4 before a home crowd.

However he was back on top of the podium in 2016, winning gold in both the men's 1000 metres time trial C4-5 and the mixed team sprint.

In the delayed 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo, he won gold again in the mixed team sprint C1–5, setting a world record of 47.570, along with fellow cyclists Kadeena Cox and Jaco van Gass.

He also nabbed a silver in the men's time trial C4–5.

Jody is not married but he is in a relationship.

The sports star got engaged to his fiancée Lucy Bowles in New York in 2022.
