The now 42-year-old joined Sunderland in 2000 from Argentinos Juniors for £3.5m.

He became an instant fans' favourite on Wearside and made 177 appearances in a successful six-year stint.

The Argentine then joined Middlesbrough in 2006 and became the current England boss Gareth Southgate's first signing.

The much-loved star announced his retirement from professional football in 2013 at the end of his Boro contract.
