Man Utd reject £20m Harry Maguire transfer bid from West Ham with star keen to fight for Old Trafford place

MANCHESTER UNITED are holding out for £35million to sell  Harry Maguire to West Ham.

The Hammers yesterday had a £20m bid rejected after being told United would NOT consider a loan deal.

Boss David Moyes is now expected to return with a bigger offer and work on convincing Maguire to move to the Europa Conference champs.

England defender Maguire, 30, is on £200,000 a week but West Ham are unlikely to match that meaning the Red Devils may have to top up his wages in compensation.

United face making a loss of about £50m on a player they got from Leicester for £85m in 2019.

West Ham have a big budget after selling captain Declan Rice to Arsenal for £105m.

Moyes has targeted Maguire, whose contract expires in 2025, as an experienced player who brings leadership.

But the Hammers boss could face competition from Spurs, Newcastle and Chelsea.

SunSport revealed Maguire was furious after being stripped of the United captaincy earlier this month, with boss Erik ten Hag appointing Bruno Fernandes in his place.

Maguire has also fallen down Ten Hag’s centre-back pecking order to fifth — behind Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and even left-back Luke Shaw.

England boss Gareth Southgate made it clear last month that he could not continue selecting Maguire if the defender was not playing regularly.

Moyes is yet to make a signing this summer and has seen a £40m offer for Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher and a £25m bid for Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse turned down.

SunSport reported last week that the club were hoping the tactic of putting several bids on the table at once will improve their chances of landing shortlisted targets.

It has not come to fruition so far, with owner David Sullivan — as well as new technical director Tim Steidten — under pressure to deliver.
