Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather: UFC ace one step closer to £100million bout against boxing great by gaining boxing licence

CAGE fighter Conor McGregor has brought a £100million bout against Floyd Mayweather one step closer – by gaining his boxing licence.

The Irish MMA sensation has been issued a boxing licence in the state of California AND is set to apply for licences in more US states – with both camps said to be in talks over the blockbusting showdown.

The Sun exclusively revealed the pair were in talks about planning the richest fight in boxing history.

Just last week, McGregor’s agent Audie Attar confirmed that his camp was “very interested” in setting up a match with the boxer.

And his coach yesterday revealed there would be a strong chance in the fight happening "next year".

McGregor, 28, became the first fighter to hold two UFC titles in November after beating Eddie Alvarez to add the lightweight belt to his featherweight crown.

But he was forced to 'relinquish' his featherweight title earlier this week, causing a reshuffle of the fight card for the upcoming UFC 206.

As the UFC still own the promotional rights for any fight McGregor takes part in, any bout would take time to arrange.

But the move has created a clearer path towards an anticipated collision, which McGregor has been calling for all year.

Mayweather, 39, retired in September 2015 after a last fight against Andre Berto to retain his WBC and WBA welterweight titles.

But the American boxing legend claimed he would put the gloves back on to face McGregor.

He said: "If I do fight, it's only against Conor McGregor . . . not against nobody else.

"Because this match-up is so intriguing. You have [a boxer] against an MMA fighter - one of the best MMA fighters to ever stand up and do it. He's a strong fighter, and when I look at his fights, he's a little faster than I thought he was."

McGregor has also been called out by Jose Aldo, who is targeting a lightweight rematch with the Notorious after branding him a p****.
