SOUTHAMPTON put in a performance for the ages to reach the League Cup semi-final for the first time since 1987.
The young Gunners were outclassed from start to finish by a fitter and more experienced Saints side.
Jordy Clasie gave Southampton the lead with a powerful strike into the top corner in the 13th minute.
And Ryan Bertrand doubled Claude Puel's side's advantage on the 38th minute with a cool side-footed finish into the bottom corner.
The pace of Southampton's midfielders had Arsenal in a spin as Arsene Wenger again paid the price for leaving EFL Cup matches to his youngsters.
Sofiane Boufal came close on several occasions before he was subbed off just after the hour.
But Arsenal didn't have it any easier against the pace of his replacement Josh Sims.
In a wonderful Southampton performance, only one player was able to get star man.
