Premier League new boys Luton in three-way transfer chase for Everton striker with Sunderland and Preston
AMBITIOUS Sunderland are planning a major move for Everton striker Tom Cannon.
The Black Cats think Cannon, 20, can fire them to promotion after he impressed at Championship level when he was on loan at Preston from January.
And Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray is willing to buy Cannon rather than take him for the season as he thinks he would be a solid investment for the future.
They are set to offer £3million plus bonuses to the Toffees in the hope they will trade — with Cannon now back at Goodison Park.
Everton wish to sell players but they had not anticipated a money move for Cannon, who was born in Aintree but has played for the Republic of Ireland at junior levels.
Promoted Luton are also interested in the forward, while Preston would like him back and may put in a bid to buy him too.
Cannon started out at Everton’s youth ranks when he was 10 years old.
The striker went on to play for the Merseysiders’ Under-18 and Under-21 sides.
The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international made his senior debut in 2022.
Cannon, though, has only managed three appearances for Everton across all competitions.

Two of those games took place in the Premier League last year.
That led the Irishman to an impressive loan stint with Preston last season.
The forward amassed a total of eight goals and one assist in 21 appearances at Deepdale.
