Mexico lost 1-0 against the latest World Cup hosts on Monday before the man was seen pulling out a knife and assaulting another supporter in the frenzied attack.

The attack left the victim with severe injuries to his body - and horror footage shows the victim attempting to stop the blood with his football shirt.

Cops arrived at the Levi's Stadium at 8.47pm but the force said "the suspect fled the scene and was not located".

Witnesses reported seeing the wounded fan apparently getting escorted to exit the venue to be treated by medics.

Gabriela Ceja, from Richmond, California, attended the game with her boyfriend and friends.

She told there were several altercations throughout the event, but the one she witnessed was particularly severe.

“At first, I thought it was a fist fight but then saw someone else who was putting, applying pressure on the guy’s chest and that’s when it hit me that he got stabbed,” she said.

Lt. Cuong Phan of the Santa Clara Police Department confirmed the stabbing incident happened during the football match.

He said the victim is recovering after suffering a stab wound to the upper collarbone area and the investigation is ongoing.

A photo of the suspect has since been issued as police have launched a manhunt.

Cops said the man is aged between 25 and 35, with dark facial hair.

He was last seen wearing a green Mexican national team jersey and was with a woman in a similar shirt, also dark-haired.

Cops said the woman is considered a person of interest.

The Gold Cup is a football tournament that brings together the strongest teams from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean.

It is common for teams from outside the region to enter - and this year, it was Qatar’s turn.

Organiser CONCACAF has not made any statement about the attack.
