Who was Eric Bristow?

Eric Bristow, also known as the Crafty Cockney, was a former professional English darts player who had been ranked at World No 1 by the World Darts Federation six times.

A five-time World Champion and five time World Masters Champion, he has won 22 World Darts Federation and British Darts Organisation titles.

Bristow dominated the '80s with a string of high-profile wins, with his outgoing personality garnering him fans.

Outside of competing, Bristow was also a founding member of the Professional Darts Corporation.

He was ultimately awarded an MBE for his services to sport in 1989 before retiring in 2007.

He was given the nickname Crafty Cockney after regularly wearing a shirt from an English pub that went by the same name.

He later courted controversy by saying his protege Phil Taylor was "brain dead".

The darts legend also unleashed a series of insensitive tweets about victims of sexual abuse, causing an uproar online.

What was Eric Bristow's cause of death?

Eric Bristow died suddenly after a heart attack, aged 60.

PDC Chairman Barry Hearn led the tributes to Bristow, stating: “Eric will always be a legend in the world of darts and British sport.

"He was a tremendous player and a huge character and even after his retirement fans would travel for miles to meet him and see him play.

“Eric was never afraid of controversy, but he spoke as he found and was honest and straightforward which is what people admired about him.

"The PDC, and the sport of darts, will miss him.”

Eric Bristow was married to his wife Jane from 1989-2005.

The pair had two children together, a girl and a boy.

The darts champion was previously in a relationship with female darts player, Maureen Flowers.
