Negotiations are ongoing with the relegated club wanting closer to £25million.

Livramento is highly-rated after playing a total of 34 games for the Saints following his move from Chelsea two years ago.

However, he featured just twice last season due to him suffering an ACL injury during April last year.

The 20-year-old could come in to compete with Kieran Trippier at right-back and allow Javier Manquillo to leave permanently and youngster Harrison Ashby to go out on loan.

Livramento could be Newcastle's second summer signing with AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali set for a £70m move to St James' Park.

And Geordies are happy with chief Ashworth and he has been hailed by fans for his recruitment.

One said: "Has anyone ever done a statue for a director of football before?"

Another added: "This is an insanely good deal if we get it done."

An Arsenal supporter reacted: "Getting jealous of the Toon army now."

Ashworth previously worked at the FA and in charge of transfers at Brighton.

He was poached by Newcastle in February 2022 and signed talents like Nick Pope, Sven Botman and Alexander Isak.

All have been vital in firing the Toon into the Champions League.
