The two sides are bitter rivals and play in the derby called the Classico Alvinegro.

With Corinthians up 2-0 away from home, Santos fans raged and threw rockets and fireworks on to the pitch.

Players had to flee and the referee called a stop to the game in the 88th minute.

As the team tried to get off the pitch they were stopped by their own fans.

The players instead took cover on the field, being surrounded by riot police for their protection.

Many thought the violence was over when the Santos faithful left the Estadio Urbano Caldeira, but more trouble followed.

Fans battled with police outside the ground and one fan allegedly stole a police car that was left empty.

Cops could be seen running after it as the car sped off.

Santos are most recognised for being Pele's team.

The Brazil icon, who passed away in December last year, won six league titles with the club during his prestigious career.
