LUIS SUAREZ has told Gremio he wants to retire from football as he battles persistent knee pain.

The 36-year-old striker only joined the Brazilian club in January, signing a contract until the end of 2024.

He is said to have informed the club of his plans to hang up his boots after playing through the issue this year.

Suarez joined Gremio in January, arriving following a six-month spell with boyhood club Nacional in his native Uruguay.

The former Liverpool star turned down offers from the MLS and Saudi Arabia to complete the move.

He has since scored 11 goals and provided eight assists in 25 appearances for the club, despite his injury pain.

Knee injuries have been a problem for Suarez during his career, especially in his time at Barcelona.

Although, he has not been sidelined with a knee problem since 2021.

Talk of Suarez's retirement comes less than a month after he shut down links with a move to the MLS.

Inter Miami had reportedly been targeting a move for the forward in a bid to reunite him with his pal Lionel Messi.

Suarez has scored 456 club career goals in 740 appearances across spells in Uruguay, the Netherlands, England, Spain and Brazil.

He scored 69 goals in 110 Premier League appearances for Liverpool between 2011 and 2014.

The Uruguayan then went on to win the Champions League, Club World Cup and four league titles with Barcelona.
