Doherty, 31, was due to join the LaLiga outfit on loan but due to Spurs having too many players on loan, his contract was terminated.

He was underwhelming during his spell in Spain as he only played 16 minutes and set a new record for the least amount of game time for a foreign player.

Following this, he was released by Atletico and he is now without a club.

This has reportedly alerted clubs in Saudi Arabia, who have set up a secret transfer war room in a London hotel in order to finalise deals for some of Europe's star players.
