De Bruyne's heartache comes two years after he suffered a horrifying facial injury following a thunderous challenge by ex-Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger.

He was forced off on the hour mark in 2021, replacd by Gabriel Jesus.

City went on to lose 1-0 to the Blues in Porto, courtesy of Kai Havertz's strike.

De Bruyne appeared to be hampered by a hamstring injury this year.

On this occasion the 31-year-old attempted to hobble on for a few minutes.

But after trying to put a cross in, De Bruyne motioned for boss Pep Guardiola to take him off.

He was then promptly removed, with England ace Foden given a chance to shine.

City fans on social media were left devastated by their star man's injury.

And another added: "Nah it can’t happen again come on."

De Bruyne was, at least, given something to smile about this time as Rodri's rocket earned City a 1-0 win to secure their place in history as Treble winners.
