AZ Alkmaar vs West Ham betting tips
West Ham are contesting a major European semi-final for the second straight season, but they'll be hoping for an entirely different outcome this year.
The Hammers suffered the disappointment of losing 3-1 on aggregate to German side Eintracht Frankfurt at the same stage of last season's Europa League campaign.
It looked to be a similar story when AZ Alkmaar took the lead in the first leg at the London Stadium, but David Moyes' side overturned the deficit to lead 2-1 heading to Holland courtesy of goals from Said Benrahma and Michail Antonio.
West Ham's dreams of a first major trophy since 1980 are still very much alive, and a draw on Thursday will be enough to reach the final in Prague on 7 June against either Basel or Fiorentina.
But that could be easier said than done.
AZ are fourth in the Dutch Eredivisie standings, just two points behind third-placed Ajax with two matches remaining, and have beaten the likes of Gil Vicente, Apollon Limassol, Lazio and Anderlecht to reach this stage.
West Ham, though, will have their full focus on this fixture having more or less secured their Premier league safety for another season.
Tense…
AZ Alkmaar should not be underestimated, especially at home.
Pascal Jansen's side boast a perfect record on home turf in this year's competition having won all eight of their ties. They also overcame a bigger, two-goal deficit in the quarter-finals when knocking out Anderlecht.
Their record against English opponents is decent enough but they've struggled for victories. They've won two, drawn five and lost once in their last eight on Dutch soil -- and that loss was inflicted by Moyes' Everton in 2007-08.
West Ham have also progressed from all 11 of their two-legged UEFA ties in which they have won the first leg at home.
On target…
All hail the king of shots! Winger Jens Odgaard is certainly NOT shy of having a crack at goal, and there's no doubting he'll try his luck again, again and again on Thursday.
The 24-year-old boasts more efforts on goal than any player in the Eredivisie with 92, and 38 of those were on target!
He's scored 12 goals and provided six assists in 45 matches this season, with an average of 3.2 shots every single league game. If West Ham sit deep, Odgaard accept the invitation to shoot.
Booked…
AZ's left-back Dani de Wit should have a difficult night ahead of him up against Jarrod Bowen… again!
Only one player has committed more fouls per match in the Eredivisie this season - and he played eight matches more than the 25-year-old.
Bowen has won 67 fouls in 36 Premier League appearances this term, and that's 23 more than the next nearest West Ham player. De Wit was booked in the first leg, and should receive another on Thursday.
