Rangers want Chelsea star as Michael Beale pinpoints defender as part of his Ibrox rebuild
RANGERS are eyeing a move for Chelsea defender Dujon Sterling.
The 23-year-old is out of contract after a season on loan at Stoke City.
Potters boss Alex Neil is keen to make the signing permanent.
But Gers boss Michael Beale knows Sterling from their time together at Stamford Bridge and hopes to hijack the deal.
He was keen to take the utility man to QPR last summer and is poised to make a fresh move.
Sterling, speaking last week, was coy on his future when asked where he’ll be next season.
The former England youth international said: “I’ll know by the end of May what I’m going to do next season.
"I’m not really talking about anything.
“I spoke to the club and I have a meeting with the gaffer on Saturday.
“For now they know my position and they respect that I don’t really want to talk about any ongoing contracts until I’m back from holiday.
“I have enjoyed my time here this season.
“We have a really good bunch of players and I think we could do something next season.”
Former Accies boss Neil has deployed Sterling as a right wing-back at Stoke.
But he can also play further up on both flanks and even centre forward.
Sterling said: “It’s never a bad thing being able to play in a number of positions.
"The fact I can play in a number of positions is beneficial to me and the team.”
Beale is also closing in on deals for keeper Jack Butland and midfielder Kieran Dowell.
Ryan Jack is on the verge of agreeing a new one-year contract at Ibrox, but a host of other players are poised to quit the club in the summer.
SunSport revealed Gers will listen to offers for striker Antonio Colak.
