Rooney, 31, and team-mate Phil Jagielka, 34, boozed for hours with guests last weekend at the Grove in Watford.

The newlyweds’ lawyer Matt Douglas said they will assist any FA probe.

But he added: “They feel their day was overtaken by events and they hold the FA responsible for not ensuring their staff respected the privacy of their wedding reception.”

The couple, who wish to stay anonymous, said both players were “very pleasant” but one guest was said to have threatened Rooney for "getting handy" with his wife.

Douglas, of Jennings Solicitors in Milton Keynes, released this statement: "My clients wish to maintain their privacy, but I can confirm that they will assist with the FA investigation into the events on their wedding night.

‘They met both Wayne Rooney and his team mate Phil Jagielka that night and found both players to be very pleasant.

“The England captain in particular came across to congratulate them and they were very happy with that and have no issues with either player while in their company.

"However, they do feel that their day was overtaken by events and they hold the governing body the FA responsible for not ensuring their staff respected the privacy of their wedding reception.

“They feel they had a duty of care both to their players and other guests at the wedding reception.

"They want to retain their privacy without any further intrusion and would ask that the media respect their wishes and have politely declined all offers to sell their story as they value their private lives and that of their families and friends above all else.”

The couple’s pledge to help the investigation will be a relief to top brass at the FA.

Today The Sun on Sunday revealed more lurid details about the boozed-up behaviour of Rooney at The Grove hotel - England’s base for their games against Scotland and Spain.
