Inside Antonio Conte’s farcical Tottenham exit with manager refusing to return from Italy despite Daniel Levy’s wishes

DANIEL LEVY has been getting stick from all quarters for the mess Tottenham find themselves in.

The common belief is that the Spurs chairman should have seen their sorry situation coming as soon as he handed the interim manager’s job to Cristian Stellini.

The problem is that Levy was acutely aware of the potential for disaster.

And this is why he did not really want boss Antonio Conte to leave when he did.

Officially the two parties split by ‘mutual agreement’ at the end of last month.

Yet initially, Levy — while knowing Conte had no long-term future at the club — wanted the fiery Italian to stay for the rest of the season.

Understandably, no successor had been lined up with just a few weeks remaining.

But Conte, having already criticised the players publicly, was having none of it.

And insisted he was staying in Italy and leaving regardless of what was announced in the statement.

For fans, the pain might get worse if Arsenal win the title.

And even West Ham could bag a European trophy.

But at least it has been confirmed that there will be a couple of trophies won at Tottenham next season.

The stadium is to hold rugby union’s Champions Cup and Challenge Cup finals.
