ANDY MURRAY
BRIT tennis star Murray has had a truly spectacular year.
Not only did the Dunblane ace win eight tournaments this year - including the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and Wimbledon - he also became world No1.
That alone is a feat surely worthy of the award - as no Brit in the open era has ever managed it before Murray.

ALISTAIR BROWNLEE
WHILE winning the 2016 Olympic triathlon title in Rio de Janeiro is a spectacular feat by itself, it's perhaps something else Brownlee will be remembered for.
During a World Triathlon race in Mexico, Alistair had a real chance to win the gold.
However, after seeing his brother Jonny struggling with heat exhaustion - weaving scarily across the road while sporting an agonising look on his face - he sacrificed the gold to help him across the line safely, in a truly pure sporting moment.

MO FARAH
BRIT long-distance runner Farah is currently the third favourite for the SPOTY title.
During the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Farah won both the 5,000m and 10,000m golds.
In doing so, he became only the second man to retain both titles after he won them originally at London 2012.

GARETH BALE
IN 2016, Bale became Wales' first goalscorer at a major international tournament since 1958 - as he led Chris Coleman's side to a 2-1 win over Slovakia.
From there, despite a loss to England, Wales went from strength to strength in reaching the Euro 2016 semi-finals, with Bale a major factor.
They would go on to lose to ultimate champions Portugal in the last four, but it was a famous summer for both the nation and Real Madrid star Bale himself.

LAURA TROTT (NOW KENNY)
ANOTHER huge Olympic success for Team GB was cycling star Trott.
Trott - now Laura Kenny after her September nuptials - won her fourth gold medal in Rio de Janeiro - two in Brazil after two at London 2012.
As one half of the golden couple - along with Jason Kenny - Trott was one of the success stories for sport in 2016.

NICK SKELTON
IN a truly remarkable story, 58-year-old Skelton became Britain's second-oldest Olympic gold medallist at the Rio Games in the show jumping.
Skelton initially retired 16 years ago after breaking his neck in two place, but returned strong to stun the world's elite.
It was also Team GB's first individual medal in the event since 1972 - when Anne Moore won silver.

MAX WHITLOCK
WHITLOCK spectacularly ended Britain's 116-year wait for a gymnastics gold medal... By winning two.
Never overawed by the occasion, Whitlock won the top gong on the floor and the pommel horse.
The 23-year-old had won two bronzes at the home Games in London four years prior, before his record-breaking feat.
