Redknapp was crossing his fingers and toes that Cheltenham winner Back On The Lash would get a run.

And with Royale Pagaille, Envoi Allen, The Shunter, Gin On Lime and Battleoverdoyen all out, his beloved runner gets in.

Back On The Lash joins Our Power, Dunboyne, Francky Du Berlais and Fortescue in making the cut for the final field of 40.

Quick Wave and Captain Kangaroo were earlier scratched before today's five-day confirmation stage.

Back On The Lash was around a 66-1 chance before he got his place in the field guaranteed.

That means he remains some way behind 6-1 favourite Corach Rambler.

The Lucinda Russell-trained dual Ultima winner is 10lbs well in and looks sure to absolutely relish the step up in trip.

He has surged through the field late on in both his Chetenham Festival wins.

But whether punters will fancy tacking such short odds in a 40-runner race where anything can happen remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, Aintree bosses are facing a headache on just how much to water the Mildmay track before racing begins.

Going was changed to good, good to firm in places before the rain last night.

The Grand National course remains good, with some softer areas.

Clerk of the course Sulekha Varma told the Racing Post: "The slight difficulty we've got is that the rainfall on Monday is not, at the moment, looking like it will come in the volume we were expecting.

"We're going to watch the forecast and make a decision on Monday as to whether to water or not.

"We've reached a point now where the ground on the Mildmay, both chase and hurdle, is not what we want to be racing on come Thursday.

"We just need to balance that forecast rain and come to a conclusion in the morning."

Coral's David Stevens said: "With 50 left in the race after this latest entry stage, there should be a full field of 40 lining up on Saturday, which is an important number for the biggest betting race of the year.

"Corach Rambler remains a clear favourite to give Lucinda Russell a second Grand National success, with Noble Yeats currently his closest market rival as the latter bids to join an exclusive club of multiple National winners."
