Sydney were losing 1-0 to Wellington when the first of the two penalties was awarded in the fifth minute of added time for a handball from Tim Payne.

Le Fondre stepped up to take the spot kick, but his powerful strike was saved by goalkeeper Oliver Sail.

Commentator Simon Hill, who had deemed the decision to award the penalty as "controversial", claimed that "justice had been done" when Sail made the fantastic stop.

But, just a few seconds after Le Fondre's strike, Sydney were awarded ANOTHER penalty for a handball from Callan Elliot.

Le Fondre stepped up once again to take the kick, but this time he fired his shot wide.

The striker immediately dropped to his knees and put his head in his hands after missing both game-changing opportunities.

Wellington went on to win the game 1-0 thanks to Oskar Zawada's early goal and Sail's heroics despite the fact they had two men - Nicholas Pennington and Bozhidar Kraev - sent off during the second half.

It was the club's first time defeating Sydney since 2018.

After the game, Wellington manager Ufuk Talay said: "Do we want to play with nine men every game? No we don’t but in this case we’ve had to deal with this situation and the boys came up trumps.

"I thought the boys showed fantastic character to get through that (drama) and we walked away with the three points."

Wellington now sit sixth in the A-League, just one point above Sydney in 8th.
