Kante, 31, is set to be out for four months - further complicating his contract situation at Stamford Bridge.
The 2018 World Cup winner's current contract expires at the end of this season - and he wants a three-year deal with an option for a fourth to renew.
Chelsea are reluctant to offer him that length of deal, given his injury woes.
Kante is reportedly willing to join Tottenham or Arsenal if he doesn't get the deal he covets in West London.
