Man Utd line up Gladbach keeper Yann Sommer as No2 to David de Gea after disastrous start to season

MANCHESTER UNITED are lining up a bid for Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer, according to reports.

Sommer, 33, is being lined up to deputise and challenge current United No1 David de Gea.

The Bundesliga veteran has one year left on his current deal and is courting interest from a number of Premier League clubs.

According to German outlet , Erik ten Hag is looking at Sommer following De Gea's poor start to the season.

This information has been echoed by , who also revealed United have a list of three shot-stoppers who they could go after.

In addition, Romano confirmed 'Gladbach have a new three-year deal on the table for the Swiss international.

De Gea's disastrous performance against Brentford where he cost the team two goals has caused Ten Hag to ramp up the search for a new keeper.

Sommer by contrast has conceded just half of the goals De Gea has, thanks to his side winning 3-1 against Hoffenheim and drawing 2-2 against Schalke in their first two games of the season.

He has been the number one at Borussia-Park since joining from Basel in 2014 and has made 326 appearances for the club.

Meanwhile, last season's United deputy Dean Henderson, who took the Spaniard's position from him during the second half of the 2020/21 season, has thus far starred on loan at Nottingham Forest.

A string of fine saves - including a Declan Rice penalty - ensured Forest kept a clean sheet and managed a win on their first home game back in the Premier League since 1999.

Henderson accused United of wasting a year of his career after he sat on the bench last season as De Gea reclaimed the No1 spot with a number of good performances when Henderson was unavailable at the beginning of the campaign.

The competition the one-time England international provided De Gea worked a treat in getting the Spaniard back to his best form, but without the threat to his position De Gea has already made two direct mistakes leading to goals.
