Football news LIVE: Football fixtures latest, Premier League announcement expected, Arsenal match OFF – updates

FOOTBALL fixtures are set to go ahead again as of THIS EVENING.

But there remains doubts over some games, particularly those in London until after the Queen's funeral.

Arsenal's match against PSV Eindhoven on Thursday is postponed, meaning the Gunners could face a nightmare fixture pile-up later in the season.

Barcelona are determined to come back in for Manchester City star Bernardo Silva.

The LaLiga giants failed in an attempt to sign the Man City ace, 28, in the summer transfer window.

Despite their financial woes, the Catalan side managed to spend almost £150million on new recruits - bringing in Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Frank Kessie, Andrea Christensen, Jules Kounde, Marcos Alonso and Hector Bellerin.

Barcelona have also managed to raise £700million by selling various digital assets, which makes any potential deal for Silva a possibility.

claim that Xavi's side can now add to their squad without any fear of spending beyond their means.

And Thomas Tuchel has broken his silence after his Chelsea exit, with the ex-Blues manager speaking of his devastation.

  • Ange Postecoglou on Brighton's managerial shortlist

Brighton are plotting a move for Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou, according to reports.

The Seagulls are on the hunt for a new head coach following Graham Potter's switch to Chelsea last week.

Previous reports claimed the south coast club had drawn up a four-man shortlist that did not include Postecoglou.

But  now report the Australian is under serious consideration to succeed Potter.

  • Man Utd 'rejected the chance to sign duo' this summer

Manchester United rejected the chance to sign Christian Pulisic and Memphis Depay during the summer, according to reports.

United endured a manic end to their transfer window as they looked to add fresh recruits for Erik ten Hag's rebuild project.

But, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that they were offered Depay, 28, on a free transfer from Barcelona, while discussions also took place with Chelsea for Pulisic, 23.

According to Romano, United submitted a loan offer for Pulisic but Chelsea had no intention of allowing the American to leave unless it was with a permanent transfer.

  • Liverpool injury blow

Andy Robertson has given Liverpool yet another crushing injury blow.

The Scottish defender picked up an injury at the end of the 4-1 loss at Napoli and will not return until after the forthcoming window.

Robertson joins Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita, Jordan Henderson, Ibrahima Konate, Curtis Jones and Caoimhin Kelleher on the sidelines.

But Fabio Carvalho could return against Ajax after he sustained a dead leg in the Merseyside derby draw with Everton on September 3.

Klopp, who will start left-back Kostas Tsimikas against Ajax, said: “Robbo is not 100 per cent. He picked it up very late in the 93rd minute and felt it the next day. He is out for at least until after the international break.”

  • Arsenal and Liverpool in Douglas Luiz transfer race

Arsenal have been joined by Liverpool in the race to sign Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz, according to reports.

The Gunners tried to sign the 24-year-old in the latter stages of the summer transfer window amid a midfield injury crisis.

However, they were unable to land boss Mikel Arteta's target.

And now they could face competition from Liverpool for Luiz's signature in future transfer windows.

According to , the Reds registered their interest in the summer, like Arsenal.

But no official move was made for the Brazil star, who has less than 12 months on his contract.

Despite signing Juventus' Arthur Melo on loan, Liverpool could revisit Luiz in January.

And midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could be used as bait to tempt Villa into selling before they lose him for FREE next summer.

  • FA confirm fixtures will resume this evening

The FA have confirmed that fixtures across the English football pyramid - including the women's football pyramid - will resume this evening.

However, some matches scheduled to take place are still at risk of being postponed due to policing issues.

An official statement read: "Last weekend, English football united together to honour and remember Her Majesty the Queen.

"We would like to express our thanks and gratitude to everyone across our game for their support and understanding as we paid respect to our long-standing Patron of The Football Association, Queen Elizabeth II.

"After a period of pause and reflection for our national game, we can confirm that fixtures will resume as scheduled, including matches from the Barclays Women's Super League and Barclays Women's Championship, the Emirates FA Cup Second Round Qualifying, Vitality Women's FA Cup, the National League System [NLS], Steps 1-6, including the Vanarama National Leagues, the Women's Football Pyramid [WFP], Tiers 3-7, and all matches across grassroots football in England. Isuzu FA Trophy and FA Youth Cup matches will return this evening.

"All matches held at stadiums are subject to leagues and clubs working with the relevant authorities to stage these fixtures, as usual practice.

"We will be recommending to clubs, leagues and competitions across the country that a minute's silence is observed before matches are played, and that black armbands should be worn where possible.

"All flags at Wembley Stadium and St. George's Park will continue to fly at half-mast this week and over the weekend.

"The FA can also confirm that all scheduled football matches will be postponed on the day of Her Majesty the Queen's funeral on Monday 19 September.

"Our thoughts at this time remain with His Majesty King Charles III, our president, HRH The Prince of Wales, and the whole of the Royal Family."

  • Must be Potty

Manchester United legend Paul McGrath says Chelsea have made a mistake with Graham Potter - and should have gone for Mauricio Pochettino or Zinedine Zidane instead.

The Blues officially unveiled Potter as their new manager on a whopping five-year contract last week after paying Brighton £20m compensation.

Former Real Madrid manager Zidane, who led them to three Champions League crowns, and ex-Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain boss Pochettino were both linked to the job initially.

And McGrath says Poch “must be wondering what on earth is going on” after Potter beat him to the post.

The 62-year-old former Republic of Ireland star wrote in the : “When you are Chelsea and you need a manager, it behoves a club that were European Champions last year and are World Club Champions to get nothing but the best.

“And right now ‘nothing but the best,’ in terms of available managers, meant either Zinedine Zidane or Mauricio Pochettino.

“Instead of going for either man who are free agents, Chelsea paid, it is believed, a total of £22million to loosen Potter and his coaches from their Brighton contracts. It makes no sense to me.

“I know Zidane seems to want to wait for the French national team job after the World Cup finals, but Chelsea are not short of the money that would have turned his head. While Pochettino must be wondering what on earth is going on.”

  • Prem pause

Chelsea's Premier League clash with Liverpool on Sunday looks set to be postponed.

But Wednesday's Champions League game at home to Red Bull Salzburg IS scheduled to go ahead.

The home game with Liverpool was due to kick-off at Stamford Bridge at 4.30pm.

But with Queen Elizabeth II's state funeral taking place in London on Monday, the demands on police mean it is likely to be rearranged.

There were talks about switching the match to Anfield to take the pressure off the Metropolitan Police.

However, moving it at such late notice would also be problematic in terms of staffing and tickets.

  • BREAKING - Arsenal vs PSV Eindhoven POSTPONED

Arsenal's Europa League clash with PSV Eindhoven - which was scheduled to take place on Thursday - has been postponed due to policing issues.

An official statement read: "UEFA today announced that the UEFA Europa League tie between Arsenal FC and PSV Eindhoven, originally to be played on Thursday 15 September, has been postponed with a new date to be communicated in due course.

"This is due to the severe limitations on police resources and organisational issues related to the ongoing events surrounding the national mourning for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II."

  • Tuchel breaks silence after Chelsea exit

Tuchel, 49, was sacked on Wednesday morning, hours after his side's 1-0 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League.

He begged with the new owners to be kept on and given more time in a brief ten-minute meeting but Boehly and his team had already made their decision.

The former boss said: "This is one of the most difficult statements I have ever had to write - and it is one which I hoped I would not need to do for many years.

"I am devastated that my time at Chelsea has come to an end.

"This is a club where I felt at home, both professionally and personally.

"Thank you so much to all the staff, the players and the supporters for making me feel very welcome from the start.

"The pride and joy I felt at helping the team to win the Champions League and the Club World Cup will stay with me forever.

"I am honoured to have been a part of this club’s history and whatever the future holds for me, the memories of the last 18 months will always have a special place in my heart."

  • Man City's wages revealed

Erling Haaland is Manchester City's second-highest earner.

The Norwegian forward has already taken the league by storm since his £51million summer arrival from Borussia Dortmund.

City beat off interest from all of Europe's elite clubs to secure Haaland's signature on a five-year, £375,000-a-week contract.

The 22-year-old has instantly begun repaying them, scoring 12 goals in his first seven competitive matches for Pep Guardiola's side.

Only Kevin De Bruyne earns more Haaland at the Etihad.

  • Akanji admits to being a Man Utd fan

Manchester City new boy Manuel Akanji has owned up to being a former Manchester UNITED fan.

But the Swiss defender insisted he has put his old allegiances aside - and wants nothing more than to beat the Red Devils in the Manchester derby.

Swiss paper Blick reminded the 27-year-old he had called United his favourite club, and said he wanted to play at Old Trafford.

Akanji said: "I gave that interview soon after I joined Dortmund [in 2018].  I said I had been a Manchester United fan as a child.

"But I also said that when you reach a certain level as a player, you are no longer a fan - as you end up playing against clubs like that.

"Then you no longer support the club as much as you did during your childhood.

"The second part was a misunderstanding.  I was asked what was my ambition, and I said to play for the best club in the world.

"People inferred that I regarded Manchester United as the world's best club, and absolutely wanted to play for them.

"But I never said anything like this.

"My love for United disappeared when I joined Basel, and played Champions League football against them. My idols became rivals.

"I reached a point when I was no longer thrilled by them as a fan - but wanted to do my job by helping my team beat them.

"The game I'm looking forward to the most is the Manchester derby.  To be able to beat United in our home city would be amazing."

The Blues boss was pictured at the club's training ground this morning.

  • Pogba set for World Cup call-up

Paul Pogba could be in line for a call up to France's World Cup squad despite his lack of fitness, reports claim.

The midfielder, 29, suffered a serious knee injury in training over the summer, throwing his World Cup hopes into doubt.

However, he could make a return to action for Juventus by November 10th, just 10 days before the tournament starts.

And despite his relative lack of game time, France coach Didier Deschamps could still call up the midfielder.

According to , Deschamps - who took over as France boss in 2012 - could utilise the full extent of his 26-man squad and bring the stricken Pogba to Qatar due to his "special status" within the team.

Pogba was a key member of the France team which won the 2018 World Cup and made it to the final of the 2016 European Championships.

  • Chelsea vs Liverpool in doubt

This Sunday's Premier League clash between Chelsea and Liverpool is highly at risk of being postponed, according to The Daily Mail.

The match, which is due to take place at Stamford Bridge, is now in doubt over policing issues.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II died peacefully aged 96 on Thursday –marking an end to her historic reign and making her son, Charles, King.

The state funeral of The Queen has been confirmed for Monday 19 September in London.

A host of police officers from across the country are set to be drafted into London to work on it and the other events surrounding the send-off with millions of mourners due to descend on the capital.

This means that there could be a lack of police resources for Sunday's fixture.

Meetings are taking place today with a conclusion imminent.

  • Officials 'hopeful' fixtures can go ahead this weekend

Some of this weekend's Premier League fixtures are at risk of being postponed.

This is due to a lack of police resources ahead of the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away last week.

But, officials are still hopeful that a conclusion can be reached.

A National Police Chiefs Council spokesperson said: “We will work with football clubs to try and ensure that, where possible, football fixtures can take place safely when balanced against the requirement to support national events and deliver day-to-day policing.

“This is a unique situation and we are working closely with everyone involved.”

But despite agreeing a £71.5million deal with Barcelona to sign the midfielder, the move collapsed.

That could also put other clubs on high alert after Chelsea and Bayern Munich were linked in the summer.

  • EXCLUSIVE - Man Utd stars expect Ronaldo to leave in January

Manchester United stars believe Cristiano Ronaldo is still angling for a move - and has his eye on a January exit.

A source said: “All the players loved it when Ronaldo came back to United last season but they are frustrated he missed pre-season.

“The manager put a lot of work into giving the squad detailed information about what he wanted them to do and how he wanted them to play.

“Ronaldo is not up to speed with that and is relying on instinct when he plays. But that doesn't work in Ten Hag’s system.

“He often demands the ball too early in build-up play and drops deep for the ball, but that means when the ball is wide there is no-one in the middle to hit it into.

“Ten Hag and the rest of the players really rate Ronaldo.

"But it’s clear that the success they have had this season is from following tactical instruction rather than the individual brilliance they relied on last season.

“Ronaldo is likely to find himself on the bench again going forward.

"And he is going to have to get used to scoring a lot less goals because he is only being introduced towards the end of games when Ten Hag has already made changes which make United less attacking.

“He needs to realise it’s only going to work if he tunes into ten Hag’s plans.”

  • BREAKING - EFL confirm fixtures to continue from tomorrow

The EFL have confirmed that Championship, League One and League Two fixtures will commence from tomorrow.

This comes after all of last weekend's matches were cancelled as a mark of respect following the death of The Queen.

An official statement read: "The EFL fixture programme will return as scheduled from Tuesday 13 September, with tributes to be paid to Her late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II at grounds around the country.

"A minute’s silence will be held before matches, with black armbands to be worn by participants, flags to be flown at half-mast and the National Anthem to be played in stadiums.

"With a national policing plan now in operation, the League and Clubs will continue to work with forces in respect of any challenges that may emerge regarding policing of specific fixtures.

"Consideration to individual circumstances will be made on a case-by-case basis, in line with standard match Safety Advisory Group (SAG) protocols."

  • Prem clubs to hold talks with police over fixtures

Football chiefs and police are continuing talks today over a number of potential match postponements for this coming weekend.

The Queen died peacefully aged 96 on Thursday - marking an end to her historic reign and making her son, Charles, King.

The Premier League and EFL postponed all matches last weekend as Scotland followed suit along with a host of other sporting events to pay tribute to Her Majesty.

The state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II has been confirmed for Monday 19 September in London.

A host of police officers from across the country are set to be drafted into London to work on it and the other events surrounding the send-off with millions of mourners due to descend on the capital.

That means that Sunday’s Premier League games are among those being discussed about being postponed or moved.

SunSport understands that England’s representatives in Uefa’s competitions this midweek will not be affected.

But talks are still ongoing regarding the domestic top-flight clashes for next weekend.

  • Ronaldo offered transfer to Saudi Arabia

Cristiano Ronaldo will have more offers to move to Saudi Arabia next year, according to football chief Yasser Al-Misehal.

The striker, 37, told Manchester United he wanted to leave the club in June in search of Champions League football.

Ronaldo could not find a suitable club to join and that led Saudi Arabia outfit Al-Hilal to make a bid.

    Al-Hilal reportedly offered CR7 a two-year deal worth a staggering £211million - which works out to £2m a week.

But he rejected the offer along with a proposal from Al-Nassr.

Despite that, president of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation Al-Misehal believes more bids will be made from Saudi clubs next year.

He told : “We would love to see a player like Cristiano Ronaldo playing in the Saudi league.

"It would bring a huge positive feedback and it would be big news for everyone. I’m sure everyone knows the achievements and records of Cristiano Ronaldo, but also as a player who is a great role model.

“I think, ‘Why not?’. I’m sure it would be a very expensive deal, of course, but we can see our clubs getting higher revenues in the past couple of years.

"We have already seen some big players who used to play in the Premier League come to the Saudi league.

“I like Cristiano Ronaldo as a player and I would like to see him play in Saudi Arabia.”
