The Spain international has made steady progress since a poor six-month spell at Benfica in 2019.

And United are now said to be in “open negotiations” as club chiefs look to provide Ten Hag with much-needed reinforcements.

The Red Devils have also been linked with former Chelsea flop Alvaro Morata, now at Atletico Madrid.

And Paris Saint-Germain misfit Mauro Icardi is thought to be in their sights too.

But it appears De Tomas is the man Ten Hag would prefer to select as his new striker this term.

United’s new boss also hopes for a boost in midfield, with a deal for Juventus’ Adrien Rabiot growing closer.

Ten Hag remains upbeat over Frenkie de Jong too, despite the Dutchman’s predicament at Barcelona.

Chelsea’s interest in De Jong appeared to cool last week, putting United back in pole position.

But an apparent hamstring injury to N’Golo Kante could now see the Blues return, leaving United’s hopes in tatters.
