But after struggling to score goals and nail down a starting spot, the German will return to Leipzig in a £25.3m transfer.

Werner arrives for nearly half the amount he was sold for and he comes with a Champions League winners' medal.

The transfer will leave boss Thomas Tuchel even shorter in the striker department.

Club record signing Romelu Lukaku has also left the club, but in a loan transfer to Inter Milan, who he helped win the Serie A in the 20/21 season.

The transfer of Raheem Sterling has helped soften the blow.

Armando Broja is also now the only recognised striker at Stamford Bridge.

Werner's compatriot, Kai Havertz can also operate up top if asked.

Chelsea could dip into the market for another forward with boss Thomas Tuchel admitting his side lack energy.
