Euro 2022: England keeper Mary Earps inspired by texts from fellow Man Utd star David de Gea before Germany showdown
MARY EARPS has been boosted ahead of the Euro 2022 final after receiving messages of support from David de Gea.
The Manchester United goalkeepers have exchanged texts during the Lionesses’ scintillating run to Sunday’s showdown with arch rivals Germany at Wembley.
Spain’s De Gea watched Earps keep a clean sheet in England’s 1-0 Euros opener over Austria at Old Trafford alongside Harry Maguire and she has only let in one goal since against the Spanish in the quarter-final.
Earps said: “Me and David speak a bit. He messaged me after the Sweden game saying congratulations.
“We message back and forth about results and clean sheets and stuff so that's always nice to have his support.
“Obviously at Manchester United he's really supportive of the women's game. I’ll take any comparison to him, no problem at all.

“I just love football and I watch as much football as I can. I watch a lot of the Premier League and I watch goalkeepers all over the world.”
Earps has cemented her place as Sarina Wiegman’s No 1 and is playing a massive role in the Lionesses’ thrilling push to Euros glory.
The Nottingham-born ace has let in just one goal at the tournament to help England book a spot in their first major final since 2009.
But there was a time when the 29-year-old’s England dreams looked doomed after she was shockingly axed by ex-England boss Phil Neville without a peep.

Earps endured an unexplained exile for over TWO YEARS from the national side and had made peace with the fact she looked set to miss this summer’s Euros.
The keeper even considered her future in football with her Man Utd contract winding down and the prospects of an international return looking bleaker than ever.
Now, after taking her country to the brink of history, Earps says wearing the Three Lions on her chest feels better than ever.
Earps said: “I don’t really want to keep going back to the past but I’m really enjoying what I’m doing now, I’m loving being part of this team. I’m loving every minute.
“Playing for this team is an absolute privilege. I love playing at this level, it’s such a fantastic feeling.
“I feel the team have been amazing and I’m so proud I can be a part of it.
“I want to help them any way that I can and whatever way I’m needed.
“Hopefully I’m never needed in a game because that means the girls are doing unbelievably in front of me — but when I am needed I want to be there and I want to give my absolute all.”
Earps has been England’s unsung hero of the tournament.
Things could have got ugly had it not been for a string of heroic saves in the epic 4-0 semi-final win over Sweden on Tuesday at Bramall Lane.
It is hard to believe she was only able to have kick-abouts with pals in the park until the age of 14 because there were no local girls teams in the area.
She filtered through Leicester City’s youth ranks before making her WSL debut with Doncaster Belles at age 17.
The United keeper said: “Rachel Daly and Millie Bright said some really nice things after the Sweden game and that just means the world to me.
“To have my team-mates say such amazing things. I just want to help the team, I want to be the best I can be for them.
“Rach and Millie tapped my head so hard after one of my saves, I’m surprised I’ve got any brain cells left after that. My mum and dad will say that I’ve never had any in the first place.”
Records are continuing to be broken at the Euros as Wiegman’s superstars continue to capture the nation.
A sell-out crowd is expected at Wembley for Sunday’s glittering final and Earps is relishing having the country’s support.

She added: “I have no doubt that England as a nation are fully behind us.
“We want to do the job to the best of our ability and inspire through our performances. Hopefully we have done that.”
