Calls for extra Bank Holiday to celebrate if Lionesses win Euro 2022

ENGLAND fans have begged Boris Johnson for an extra Bank Holiday to celebrate if the Lionesses win the Euros.

The favourites will face Germany in a nail-biting final at Wembley on Sunday.

The mega showdown — taking place on the weekend of the 56th anniversary of the 1966 men’s World Cup final between the two countries —  will see the Germans attempt to beat the hosts and claim a record ninth Euros trophy.

But it will make a Lionesses' win all the sweeter, with Brits calling for a day to celebrate after Boris refused to rule one out ahead of the men's final last year.

One person wrote on social media: "Are we getting a bank holiday on Monday of the England women’s team win the Euros Sunday?"

Another said: "So if the women win the Euros are we gonna get a bank holiday or ???"

Someone else added: "Sooo Boris if the women win the Euros do we get that bank holiday we were supposed to get last year ??????"

The Lionesses produced a sensational performance on Tuesday night as they thrashed Sweden 4-0 at Bramall Lane and booked themselves a place in the final.

They are now hoping to go one step further than the men's team last summer - with Gareth Southgate's men losing their final on penalties to Italy.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer backed an extra Bank Holiday for a win last night - although the Government has since ruled out the move.

Sir Keir told : "The whole country will be roaring on the Lionesses in the final on Sunday.

"They have already done us proud, but if they win it will be a truly historic achievement - one that should be marked with a proper day of celebration, where clubs can open and promote access for women and girls."

Ex sports minister Tracey Crouch and Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey also told the paper they backed the idea.

Tracey Crouch said: “The Lionesses have already made the nation so proud, blazing a trail for women’s football everywhere.

"If we win on Sunday, let’s give everyone a chance to celebrate with a special bank holiday as we said we would for the men."

But a UK Government spokesperson has since ruled out the move, insisting the country can't afford any more days off.

They said: "The Lionesses have done England proud with their fantastic run to the Euro 2022 final.

"The whole country will be roaring them on and hopefully watching a famous victory against Germany on Sunday evening.

"We will certainly be celebrating their success. However, the current pattern of public and bank holidays is well established and while an additional bank holiday may benefit some communities and sectors, the cost to the economy of an additional bank holiday is considerable."
