Republic of Ireland star Aaron Connolly signs for Italian side Venezia on-loan for one year
IRELAND attacker Aaron Connolly has joined Italian Serie B outfit Venezia on a season-long loan from Brighton.
Connolly, 22, has agreed to the switch to the club, who were relegated from Serie A after one season in the top flight to kickstart his career after a disappointing last 18 months.
The Galway man burst onto the scene in 2019 with two goals on his first Premier League start for Brighton against Tottenham to earn an Ireland call-up under Mick McCarthy.
He then made his Ireland debut in Stephen Kenny’s first game in charge against Bulgaria in 2020.
But his career has stuttered since, with his last Premier League goal in January 2021 before he lost his place in the Brighton side and Ireland squad.
He was loaned to Middlesbrough this year but his time at Boro also saw him struggle for goals with just two in 21 appearances - 14 from the start.
And he has remained outside Stephen Kenny’s plans as the Ireland gaffer revealed that he has also had injury problems that require rest.
Now Connolly, who has two years remaining on his Brighton contract, has made the move to Italy.
