Jack Ormondroyd hopes to score at St James’ Park – just like his dad

JACK Ormondroyd hopes to keep it in the family by scoring at Newcastle.

And the Salford prop admits lessons from his old man Ian are helping him in a completely different sport.

Rewind 31 years when Newcastle United faced Derby County in a Second Division clash and one of the visitors' scorers in a 2-2 draw was a certain I Ormondroyd.

Until SunSport contacted him, his boy had never seen the strike. Now against Huddersfield today, he can match his old man's exploits.

And Ormondroyd Jr revealed how lessons from his father in being a sportsman apply, even though rugby league is worlds away from football.

He said: “I didn’t know dad had scored there. A right foot finish? That was dad’s wrong foot as he’s left footed.

“But I speak to him quite a lot about being a sportsman. Him and my mum are at every game I play and even though the sports are different, it’s the same mentality.

“He’s helped me out quite a lot as he understands what it’s like to be part of a professional team and play professional sport.

“I’ve also realised over the last couple of years the way you look after yourself off the field is massive too.

“And the venue may bring more out of me as a player and more out of us as a team. We were told, ‘It’s an occasion, you don’t get many of them.’

“I’m especially looking forward to it as I’ve never played at Magic Weekend. I was going to play last year but I got knocked out the game before.”

Ornondroyd played a huge part in Salford's win at Warrington with an unlikely two-story haul. Now the Red Devils hope to make it three in a row by defeating former boss Ian Watson's Huddersfield.

The styles could not be more different. The Giants are as structured as they come while Paul Rowley's men dazzled while scoring 106 points in two games.

But there is more than meets the eye as Ormondroyd can forget about the traditional nude run at the end of the season for not scoring a try – one he was preparing for.

He added: “Scoring two tries doesn’t happen often. I think I did it at Featherstone once.

“My dad texted me saying, ‘How did you not manage to score?’ when we put 74 points on Wakefield.

“It was a long time since I’d scored one try, never mind two. I was getting set for not scoring this year, I’d got my mind on the nude run!”
