VINCENT KOMPANY could be set for a sensational 11th-hour bid to snatch Shaun Maloney from Dundee.

But SunSport understands Kompany is keen to link up with his ex-Belgium coach if he takes over at Burnley.

The Clarets are ready to bring in the former Manchester City skipper to spearhead their bid to return to the Premier League after they dropped down to the Championship last weekend.

Kompany, 36, had been in charge at Anderlecht in his homeland for the last two seasons, but left the club earlier this week in preparation for his expected appointment at Turf Moor.

It would be the former defender’s first taste of life in management in British football and he is looking to bring in a coach with experience of the leagues.

Maloney, who was assistant to Belgium boss Roberto Martinez, fits the bill and the move to Burnley could tempt him to snub a switch to Dens Park.

Dundee director of football Gordon Strachan wants to bring in the 39-year-old after working with him as a player for Celtic and Scotland.

The Dark Blues want their new man in place by the weekend and discussions are ongoing.

Maloney is ready to get back into football just weeks after being sacked by Hibs, having given up his coaching role with the Belgian national side to head for Easter Road.

But Hibees chief Ron Gordon pulled the trigger after just four months and 19 games following a series of indifferent results, including back-to-back defeats to Hearts.

But with the Tayside club now in the Championship — and a significant rebuild required — Maloney is seeking assurances over financial backing and support to get them back up.

Kompany’s late interest could see the former playmaker look into the option of a return to English football where he enjoyed playing spells with Aston Villa, Wigan and Hull City.
