PAUL SCHOLES has labelled Manchester United as "unrecognisable" following their latest embarrassment - and urged them to settle for EIGHTH.

The Red Devils were humiliated 4-0 by fierce rivals Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday night as their Champions League dream crumbled.

United now sit sixth in the league, behind Arsenal and Tottenham - just two points above West Ham and Wolves, should the latter win their game in hand.

Ralf Rangnick's side could feasibly slip to eighth in the Premier League - but Scholes HOPES that's the case.

Scholes, 47, was so incensed after his former club's catastrophic implosion at Anfield he shared a rare Instagram post urging the board to avoid any European football and give incoming boss Erik ten Hag time.

Alongside a picture of the Dutch manager, Scholes wrote: "Finish 8th and give this man the time he needs...

"[I'm] saddened by what's happening... unrecognisable football club."

Scholes had earlier ranted to Premier League Productions about his "disgusting" former team.

He said: He said: "I’ve lost a little bit of anger towards it now, I feel saddened, it’s not great to watch.

"I’d like to see them give at least a little bit of effort, it looks like the last place they want to be.

"They want their season over, they want it done, they want to move on, but unfortunately there’s no hiding place. You can’t come to Anfield and be like that.

"Them fans have travelled a long way, it’s disgusting to watch. But that’s where the club are at the minute.

"They’ve got to give a little bit of effort, just for them fans coming to the ground."

United's current form is so bad, without Cristiano Ronaldo they would be 12th in the Premier League - potentially slipping as low as 15th.

Incredibly, Liverpool battered the Red Devils 9-0 across their two league games this season.

Man Utd have only suffered a combined heavier defeat ONCE in their entire history, losing 11-0 across their two matches against Sunderland in 1892-93.

"QUESTION MARKS"

And another former United ace, Mikael Silvestre, has joined Scholes in giving the club some advice as attention already begins to turn to the summer.

Silvestre told Sky Sports: "Bruno Fernandes signed a new contract, so he's one that needs to stay.

"David de Gea, Raphael Varane who we haven't seen much of this season, Harry Maguire needs to improve.

"I think he's a good leader, he's having a difficult time at the moment, but he needs to stick to United and work hard to go back to his best.

"And I would say Marcus Rashford would need to stay as well.

"Those guys I think have got United in their heart but for the rest I think there is questions marks for all of them."
