Rooney was asked by presenter Dave Jones whether Ronaldo's emotional return to Old Trafford had worked out as planned.

And he resoundingly answered: "You'd say no at the minute. He's scored goals, he's scored important goals in the Champions League early on in the season. He scored obviously the hat-trick against Tottenham.

"But I think if you look to the future of the club you would have to go with younger, hungry players to do the best to lift Manchester United over these next two, three years.

"And obviously Cristiano is getting on a bit."

Rooney went on to suggest that 37-year-old Ronaldo doesn't offer enough throughout the course of 90 minutes on the pitch.

Instead, he doubled down on the Red Devils switching their recruitment policy to offer opportunities to "young, hungry players".

Rooney continued: "[Ronaldo] certainly obviously isn't the player he was when he was in his twenties, and that happens, that's football.

"He's a goal threat, but I think the rest of the game I think they need more, and they need young, hungry players."

The topic of debate then switched to Pogba, who is out of contract at Old Trafford in the summer.

Rooney labelled the 29-year-old midfielder as a "different player" in the colours of national team France, and advised the club to part ways with the midfielder at the end of the season.

He said: "I think it's probably got to a point now probably it's better for him to move on.

"And I think if Paul is honest with himself he probably hasn't had the impact he would have liked since he returned to Manchester United.

"And I watch him play for France and it's a completely different player, the ability and his vision, controlling the game is there every game for France.

Rooney though suggested that there are more players who need to be shifted in the summer alongside Pogba.

He concluded: "It just hasn't quite worked at Manchester United for him and I think there's a few players they need to let go."
