Ajax allegedly gave their boss permission to be interviewed by United last week with them willing to accept £4m in compensation for him.

United have been doing “due diligence” on Ten Hag since talking to him.

And that included finding out how much it would cost them to prise him away from Amsterdam.

Ten Hag moved to Ajax from Utrecht in 2017 and led them to the Champions League semi-final in 2019.

He has also lifted the Eredivisie twice as well as the KNVB Cup two times.

Ajax are currently two points clear of title rivals PSV in top spot with seven games to go.

And the two teams will also meet in the KNVB Cup final on April 17.

Meanwhile, former United boss Louis van Gaal has advised compatriot Ten Hag steer clear of a move to the Theatre of Dreams because they are a "commercial club" as opposed to a football one.

He said: "I think Ten Hag is great coach.
