‘This is their secret to success’ – Rangnick tells Man Utd to follow City and Liverpool’s blueprints to get back to top

RALF RANGNICK says Manchester United have to follow the planning of their neighbours to get back to the top.

United take on Manchester City in the derby at The Etihad this Sunday and the interim boss says that they and hated rivals Liverpool have the blueprint for success.

Rangnick said: “City and Liverpool have continuity and consistency of head coach, for the past five or six years.

“They have very clear identity, how they want to play.

“I know Jurgen in person and I know Pep from his time in Germany, he also has a clear idea how he wants to play.

“This is the secret behind their success, they know exactly how they want to play, a corporate identity. Not just for new players.

“This is what all the top clubs have in common. This is something that needs to be developed at Manchester United.

“For me it's about consistency on the highest possible level and also quality.

“We all agree with Jurgen and Pep, they’re the best two coaches on the planet.

“It’s pretty easy in football you need to have the best possible people, a clear idea of football and stick to that idea and make decisions with that in mind. “

As it stands United don’t even know who their next manager will be with Rangnick not ruling himself out the running.

He said: “I haven't made any thoughts about that. My focus is on Sunday and then the next game against Tottenham, Atletico, there is no time and no space to think about anything else than the upcoming games."

This Sunday’s challenge Rangnick regards as the toughest they could face anywhere in the world.

But United have created 160 chances in the Premier League since he took charge and if they can take any presented at The Etihad, who knows?

He said: "We know that we are playing against one of the best, if not the best team, in Europe and the world.

“They have developed well since he arrived. The same happened at Bayern too. He is one of the most influential coaches in the last 10, 15 years. We know what type of team and style we are facing.

“For us it will be about tactical discipline, defending, sprinting, running. Waiting for transition and then taking our chances.

"We created enough in last 10, 11 games. At times we convert them, like against Leeds, but we should have scored more especially in the last game against Watford.

"But I would be more worried if we didn't create chances and against the ball when the other team is in possession we are compact and we didn't allow them too many chances.”
