Bundesliga in talks over major revamp to league structure with plans to end season with play-off system

THE Bundesliga could be set for a major reshuffle which would see the introduction of end-of-season play-offs.

Bayern Munich have won the title in each of the last nine seasons and look set to make it a 10th in a row later this year.

They currently lead Borussia Dortmund by six points heading into the final 12 games of the campaign.

And Bayern's recent dominance has led organisers to think up fresh ways of injecting excitement back into the title race.

The are reporting that the German Football League (DFL) are discussing bringing in play-offs for the end of the campaign.

DFL CEO Donata Hopfen told : "There are no taboos for me. If play-offs will help us, then we'll talk about play-offs."

And Bayern's CEO Oliver Kahn also supported the idea of the reshuffle despite it having the potential to negatively impact his side.

He told Kicker: "I find it exciting to think about new models such as play-offs for the Bundesliga.

"A format in the Bundesliga with semi-finals and finals would mean excitement for the fans.

"So it makes sense to play through such an idea. We at FC Bayern are always open to new ideas."

However, most Bundesliga clubs are thought to be against the idea of play-offs among the top clubs - with the likes of Bayer Leverkusen, Eintracht Frankfurt and Union Berlin all opposing it.

And former Bayern president Uli Hoeness was by no means on board with the proposal.

When referencing Kahn's openness to it, he told Servus TV: "That's his opinion - it's not mine. I find that ridiculous.

"In the Bundesliga, whoever is the best after 34 matchdays and who has gone through thick and thin with his team should win the championship.

"That's just a law against Bayern Munich! That has nothing to do with tension.

"The new managing director of the DFL (Hopfen) thinks day and night about how to break the dominance of FC Bayern.

"And that's when they came up with this idea. There are no play-offs in any major league in the world, not in England, not in Spain, not in Italy, not in France."

And Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller simply stated: "A totally wrong approach. I'm completely against it."
