Morata, 23, returned to the Santiago Bernabeu this summer after two seasons at Juventus.

After spending nearly £30m to activate his buy-back clause, Morata had been linked with a move to Arsenal or Chelsea.

But the Premier League clubs were put off by the huge £60m price-tag Real had slapped on the Spanish international.

That didn't deter Diego Simeone.

According to Spanish newspaper , Atletico made an official offer for Morata.

But it was rejected out of hand.

Simeone wanted to bring back Chelsea striker Diego Costa to the Vicente Calderon but the Blues would't sell.

He eventually settled on a deal for Sevilla striker Kevin Gameiro.

Atletico have endured their worst start to a season under Simeone, having drawn their opening two matches.

Morata has started both of Real Madrid's matches, scoring in the 2-1 win against Celta Vigo at the weekend.
