How Arsenal lined up last time they were in Champions League with Bayern Munich humiliation their final match

ARSENAL begin their first Champions League campaign in six years as they take on PSV on Wednesday night.

The Gunners have been draw in a group alongside the Dutch outfit, Lens and Sevilla.

Arsenal last played in Europe's elite club competition in the 2016/17 season and crashed out at the round of 16 stage to Bayern Munich.

The German giants, then managed by Carlo Ancelotti, humiliated Arsene Wenger's side over two legs, winning both matches 5-1 to thrash the North Londoners 10-2 on aggregate.

The second defeat came at the Emirates as Bayern ran riot to leave Arsenal embarassed.

Theo Walcott had opened the scoring to give fans a glimmer of hope before Laurent Koscielny was shown a straight red card after 53 minutes for a foul on Robert Lewandowski inside the box.

The Polish striker stepped up and converted the spot-kick as the thrashing begun.

Arsenal's heads dropped and Bayern punished them, first via Arjen Robben.

Douglas Costa then got on the scoresheet before Arturo Vidal added two late goals to rub salt in the wounds.

David Ospina was in goal that day for the Gunners, he is now playing for Al-Nassr.

A back four of Hector Bellerin, Shkodran Mustafi, Koscielny and Nacho Monreal failed to keep Bayern out.

Bellerin is now at Real Betis, Mustafi is without a club and the other two defenders have both retired.

Wenger chose midfield trio Granit Xhaka, Aaron Ramsey and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain that day.

Xhaka left Arsenal in the summer for Bayer Leverkusen, Ramsey is captaining Cardiff and the Ox is now at Besiktas.

Walcott and Alexis Sanchez featured in an attack spearheaded by Olivier Giroud.

Both Sanchez and Giroud are involved in this year's Champions League with Inter and AC Milan repsectively.

Icon Wenger would last just one more year in the job after the humiliating defeat, finally leaving the club in 2018 after 22 years at the helm.
