Interim coach Lee Carsley had previously been considered the odds-on favourite to succeed Gareth Southgate.

He's claimed three victories from his first four matches in the Nations League, but seems to have sent mixed messages on whether he actually wants the role.

Following the Three Lions' surprise defeat to Greece, Carsley said that he would "hopefully" soon be back in charge of the U21 side.

Then, after the 3-1 win over Finland, Carsley again distanced himself from the suggestion he hopes to stay with the senior squad permanently.

"I keep saying the same thing. My remit was six games and I'm happy with that," he said. "This job deserves a world-class coach that has won trophies and I am still on the path to that."

Subsequently, Spanish icon Pep Guardiola has been installed as favourite at 5/4 with his contract up at the Etihad in June.

Thomas Tuchel emerged as a strong contender, after being backed into as short as 8/15, but he has since drifted to 13/8 second favourite.

Other notable names in contention include Lee Carsley (7/1), Eddie Howe (7/1) and Graham Potter (10/1), but all three have drifted in the betting after strong links surrounding the front two in the market.

Spokesperson for William Hill, Lee Phelps, said: "Pep Guardiola is now the 5/4 favourite to become the next England manager after being slashed from 12/1.

"Rumours around the current Manchester City manager's future have hotted up this week with the England national team job emerging as a strong possibility for the Spaniard's next move.

"Ex-Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel was as short as 8/15 for the role, but he has now been pushed out to 13/8 and been usurped as favourite by Pep Guardiola."
