Canelo Alvarez could fight Gennady Golovkin next in epic trilogy if Mexican P4P star fails to secure Caleb Plant deal
GENNADY GOLOVKIN could be set for a trilogy fight against Canelo Alvarez should the Mexican fail to agree a bout with Caleb Plant.
The WBA, WBO and WBC super-middleweight king has been keen to get it on with IBF champion Plant over an undisputed contest later this year.
A September date in Las Vegas has been mooted, though it has been reported that negotiations have hit a snag.
According to The Athletic's DAZN Boxing reached out to Golovkin's camp about a third meeting against Canelo.
The pair drew in their first contest in September 2017, with many believing that the Kazakhstan ace, 39, should have been awarded the victory.
Golovkin then suffered the first defeat of his professional career at the hands of Canelo a year later, though fans and pundits argued a draw was the least he deserved in the rematch.
It has been claimed that the middleweight supremo is 'ready, willing and available' to settle his differences with his rival.
Pugmire also tweeted that Golovkin's team are unsure whether his name is being used to help Canelo get a better deal to fight Plant.
Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn discussed talks between Alvarez and Plant on the , where he said: "I feel like Caleb Plant shouldn’t be a pawn in this.
"Caleb Plant is a guy that should get the best deal and the best opportunity for this fight, but unfortunately that’s boxing, but we’ll see where it goes.

"This week is the crunch week. We have to make a decision this week. We have two or three other fights ready to go.”
Hearn revealed earlier this month that Canelo could even jump up to light-heavyweight to take on unbeaten IBF and WBC champ Artur Beterbiev.
He told : “You know, you have Joe Smith, you have Dmitry Bivol and you have Artur Beterbiev.
"Dmitry Bivol is probably the easiest fight to make because he works with us.
“But Artur Beterbiev, Canelo talks about that, but he knows how hard Beterbiev punches, and Canelo's a competitor.
“Now you tell him that's not the fight to take. You want to take it? You tell him that's a dangerous fight? He'll want to do it."
