Andros Townsend and James Tomkins make Crystal Palace debuts in US Tour match
The £23million worth of new signings get some game time as the Eagles draw 0-0 with MLS side Philadelphia Union
ANDROS TOWNSEND and James Tomkins made their Crystal Palace debuts, but the £23million duo were not able to mark the occasion with a win.
The Eagles drew 0-0 with MLS side Philadelphia Union in the first game of their three-match US tour.
England winger Townsend, who moved to Selhurst Park from Newcastle for £13million last month, started the game and played for 60 minutes.
Former West Ham defender Tomkins came on at half-time to replace captain Scott Dann.
Tomkins made a £10million move across London earlier this month.
But Tomkins’ first appearance in a red and blue shirt came at a cost.
Eagles boss Alan Pardew said: “James got stretched twice in his first two moments in the game and has got a little strain.
“That was a bit of a disappointment, but I don't think it will keep him out too long.”
As for Townsend, Pardew was impressed.
He said: “Andros showed why he's going to be an important player for us, he was a real highlight of our team.”

And despite a lack of goals from his side, Pardew was pleased with the workout.
He said: “It’s just a shame for the fans there were no goals, because fans love goals.
“We were pushing to try to win it, but in that final moment of getting that shot off we just didn’t show that usual quality, but that’s a process that comes later on in the pre-season for us.
“Our fitness levels looked good - we lacked a little bit of sharpness and cutting edge, but they still needed their keeper to make three fabulous saves in the second half – they really were top drawer.”
Palace face Cincinnati on Saturday before taking on Vancouver Whitecaps on Tuesday.
