Cristiano Ronaldo and Conor McGregor scoop prizes at the Espys, America’s sporting version of the Oscars

CRISTIANO RONALDO and Conor McGregor have both scooped awards at the American sports version of The Oscars.

Portugal star Ronaldo, fresh from lifting the European Championship title last week, was named best international sportsman at the ESPYS.

And Irish UFC star McGregor was named best fighter at the glittering bash in Los Angeles on Wednesday night.

Neither Ronaldo or McGregor were there to collect their honours in person, but Manchester United target Paul Pogba was in the audience at the Microsoft Theatre as he contemplates a £100million move to Old Trafford.

The ESPY - Excellene in Sport Performance Yearly - awards are held each year by US broadcaster ABC having first been set up by ESPN.

They celebrate the best in sporting achievement, primarily in sports popular in America, each year.

Serena Williams scooped the best female tennis player prize fresh from securing her latest Wimbledon singles title last week.

Novak Djokovic took the male tennis player prize after an exceptional season despite his early exit from the All-England club as Andy Murray won for a second time.

Holly Holme was also a winner, taking the biggest upset award after her shock demolition of UFC star Ronda Rousey last November.

Basketball star LeBron James took two gongs on the back of the Cleveland Cavaliers winning the NBA play-offs.

And Jordan Spieth, currently trying to win The Open at Royal Troon, was the recipient of the best golfer prize.
