Hal Robson-Kanu’s wonder goal was Johan Cruyff turn and Lionel Messi magic all in one
THERE have been fiercesome shots, marvellous headers and opportunist openings fully seized upon at Euro 2016.
But there hasn’t been anything quite like Hal Robson-Kanu’s turn that paved the way for the Reading striker’s super-duper 55th minute goal in Wales’ superb 3-1 triumph over Belgium.
Aaron Ramsey put in an early cross and Robson-Kanu brought it down with his back to goal.
Amazingly, the fleet-footed Welshman bamboozled three Belgian players, sending them all the wrong way, before slotting past startled keeper Thibaut Courtois.
It was a Johan Cruyff turn come Lionel Messi piece of magic all woven into one…a marvellous piece of skill on Europe’s greatest stage.
Robson-Kanu has been at Reading for 11 years, spending the majority of his time outside the Premier League.
But few in the English top flight could ever manage this effort – and the reaction to his goal, which put Wales 2-1 ahead, was emphatic.
Robson-Kanu has actually been released by The Royals and former Welsh ace John Hartson, working for the BBC, said:
“If I was a chairman of a Premier League club I would be making Hal Robson-Kanu my next signing. What a goal.”
Said another former Welsh star, Robbie Savage, also with the BBC:
“This is unbelievable. What a run from Aaron Ramsey, Maroune Fellaini didn’t track him. What a Cruyff turn that was from Hal Robson-Kanu.
“If that was Messi, they’d be talking about it for years. See you later Meunier.
“And then the composure to score.”
