EU chief Donald Tusk wasted no time putting the boot into England after the humiliating defeat to Iceland, joking: 'Winter is coming'.

But it appeared to backfire spectacularly when he referred the team as the UK, sparking a backlash on Twitter.

Relations with Europe have been frosty at best since the historic Brexit vote on Friday.
And Tusk was quick to take a swipe ahead of crunch talks with David Cameron and other EU leaders in Brussels today.
Adopting the famous phrase used in Game of Thrones to suggest doom is on the horizon, he tweeted: "UK-Iceland 1-2. Winter is coming."

The bungling bureaucrat followed that up saying: 'England, of course. Sorry ;-)."

The clarification was seized on by some followers who tore into the diplomat for making such an fundamental blunder.

The loss, considered one of its worst ever victories, sparked delight among rival European nations.

Newspapers in Germany and Portugal likened it to 'Brexit 2', while others praised the heroic performance of the Iceland team.
