ENGLAND v SRI LANKA: Third Test fizzles out after weather restricts visitors to 78-1
Jimmy Anderson strikes to trap Kaushal Silva leg before but Alastair Cook's men unable to make further inroads
ENGLAND were denied a series whitewash of Sri Lanka when the Third Test was abandoned as a rain-hit draw.
Just 12.2 overs were possible on the final day at Lord’s in two periods of play.
And the game was eventually called off just after 5pm with the tourists 78-1 in their second innings, having been set an unlikely 362 to win.
It means England claim the three-match series 2-0 after wins at Headingley and Chester-le-Street.
But captain Alastair Cook will be frustrated his side did not get the chance to try and claim the 10 wickets required to complete a cleansweep.
The only wicket they were able to get in the limited action was when James Anderson had Kaushal Silva trapped lbw for 16 in the fourth over of the day.
Opener Dimuth Karunaratne, though, remained unbeaten on 37, while No 3 Kusal Mendis finished with 17 - hitting the last ball of the series for six off Joe Root.
England now play five one-day internationals against Sri Lanka and one Twenty20 match.
Jonny Bairstow is back in the ODI squad having shone with the bat in the Test series, but Stuart Broad misses out.
Pace bowler Tymal Mills is included in the Twenty20 squad for the first time, alongside Middlesex batsman Dawid Malan.
